SHANGHAI - Chery, the Chinese automaker widely known for its technologically advanced SUVs, is expanding its vehicle lineup into a new segment. The company is currently developing a new mid-size pickup truck named the Chery Stockman. Designed to compete in the highly competitive global mid-size truck market, this new model introduces a unique diesel plug-in hybrid (PHEV) system. It is expected to arrive in automotive showrooms by the end of this year.

Bold Exterior Design and Robust Dimensions

The Chery Stockman is built on a regulatory platform architecture that gives it a commanding presence on the road. The official vehicle dimensions are:
  • Length: 5,450 mm
  • Width: 1,920 mm
  • Height: 1,925 mm
The exterior design combines modern aesthetics with rugged functionality. The front fascia features a wide horizontal grille flanked by circular LED headlight units, giving the truck a distinct look. Flared fenders cover the wheels, emphasizing its off-road capability and muscular stance.

Premium Interior Comfort and Technology

Inside the cabin, Chery blends truck utility with luxury SUV comfort. The interior features high-quality materials and a modern layout, including a leather-wrapped steering wheel and an electronic gear shifter.

The dashboard is dominated by a dual-screen infotainment system mounted high for optimal visibility. To enhance passenger comfort, the cabin architecture integrates premium features such as:
  • A panoramic sunroof
  • Heated seats
  • An automatic climate control system

Next-Generation Diesel PHEV Powertrain

The most notable feature of the Chery Stockman is its advanced series-parallel plug-in hybrid architecture. While most hybrid pickups use petrol engines, Chery has chosen a diesel hybrid system to maximize towing capacity and fuel efficiency.

The powertrain features a 2.5-liter twin-turbocharged diesel engine that produces 210 kW (282 horsepower) and 650 Nm of torque. This internal combustion engine achieves an impressive thermal efficiency rating of 47 percent, making it one of the most efficient diesel engines in its class.

The engine works in tandem with an electric motor connected to a rear-mounted battery pack. This battery is designed to provide a pure electric driving range of up to 170 kilometers on a single charge. This setup allows drivers to complete daily commutes using only electricity, while still having the full power of a diesel engine for heavy towing and long-distance travel.

The Origin of the 'Stockman' Name

The name "Stockman" has a unique origin story. Chery hosted a public naming competition in Australia, inviting citizens to submit potential names for the new pickup truck. The public submitted over 20,000 potential name badges.

Last month, Chery narrowed this massive list down to nine finalists before officially selecting "Stockman." The term refers to a person who looks after livestock on a large rural property or station. This name was chosen because it reflects the rugged, hardworking, and reliable nature of the vehicle.
